2007 World Men's Handball Championship

The 20th World Handball Championship for men was held in Germany from 19 January to 4 February 2007. A total of 24 teams entered in the preliminary round and main round, first in groups against each other. This was followed by elimination games with quarterfinals, semifinals and finals and placement matches for places three through eight. Hosts Germany was a 29:24 victory in the final against Poland for the third time after 1938 and 1978 Handball World Championship.

Inspired by the Football World Cup 2006, which was referred to as " summer fairy tale ", the triumph of the German handball team in the media was called " Winter's Tale".

A total of twelve cities hosted the World Handball Championship 2007. The largest and most modern arenas in Germany were selected, also opted for a less seamless distribution of the venues. The World Cup final was held in the Cologne Arena on February 4, 2007.

After the first World Handball Championship in 1938 and the tournaments in 1958 ( in the German Democratic Republic ), 1961 ( in the Federal Republic of Germany ), 1974 ( in the German Democratic Republic) and 1982 ( in the Federal Republic of Germany ) was 2007 Handball World Championship for the sixth time on German soil. Mascot

Hanniball was the official mascot of the Handball World Cup 2007 in Germany.

It represents a squirrel ( Sciurus Latin, " croissant " ) dar. The name is inspired by the Carthaginian general Hannibal from pre-Christian times. By reference to the Carthaginian general, the name should symbolize attributes such as courage, boldness, determination and activity. In addition, the name also contains a pun ( Hanniball - " Handball ").

Qualification

According to the rules of the IHF first three countries could each continent except Oceania qualify for the World Cup. Main Round

The main round was held from 24th to 28th of January. In the main round twelve teams played in two groups of six, with the appropriate professionals teams in the preliminary round Group A to C in group I ( in Dortmund and Halle (Westfalen )) and the teams in the preliminary round Group D to F in group II ( in Mannheim ) played.
