History

The place is first mentioned in 1272 as Alvetes Ho ( hill of Alvet ).

Place name

Alfstedt was first mentioned in 1272 as Alvetesho or Alveltisho. However, it is questionable whether this really Alfstedt is meant. Maybe this is more of a field name, possibly related to the Hamberg at Alfstedt. Endings -ho as in Isarnho, Itzehoe, Springo (Schleswig -Holstein) can mean " hook angle ", " wedge-shaped or like a peninsula projecting increase ", " slope " or " meander ". Alfstedt appear otherwise in the historical evidence as Alvested and goes to " Alfes - sted " back for "settlement of Alf (old first name ) ".
