Coat of arms of New Jersey

The seal of the U.S. state of New Jersey was originally designed by Pierre Eugène du Simitière in 1777 and 1928, slightly modified.

Description

The seal includes:

  • A sign on the three plows as a representative of New Jersey's agricultural tradition are mapped
  • A forward-facing knight's helmet
  • A horse's head as a crest
  • The goddesses Liberty and Ceres, as a representative of the state mottos. Liberty holds a staff with a Phrygian cap. Ceres holding a cornucopia.
  • The banner at the foot of the emblem contains the motto of the State of New Jersey, " Liberty and Prosperity " ( German: " freedom and prosperity " ), and the year when New Jersey became a state: 1776.

This seal is also the central motif in the flag of New Jersey.
