Seal of South Carolina

The seal of the U.S. state of South Carolina was adopted on April 2, 1776 as the official seal.

Description

The seal consists of two elliptical fields that are interconnected by palm branches.

The first field is dominated by a palm tree that towers over a fallen tree and crumbled. This display commemorates the successful defense of the fort on Sullivan Island on June 28, 1776 against the British fleet.

The second field shows a female personification of hope (Latin: Spes ), with scattered across a beach lying about weapons goes. She stops in front of a rising sun a laurel wreath in his hand.
