Seal of Alabama

The Great Seal of Alabama is the state seal of the U.S. state of Alabama.

Description

The seal shows a map of Alabama within its borders. Because of their economic importance, the rivers are highlighted and named.

History

The seal was designed in 1817 by William Wyatt Bibb, who was then governor of the " Alabama Territory " and later became the first governor of the U.S. state of Alabama. When he joined in 1819 as the 22nd state of the United States of America, the Parliament adopted the draft as an official state seal.

Bibbs design was used until 1868 as the official seal, when it was replaced by a newer. It was an eagle standing on a U.S. coat of arms, carrying a banner with the words "Here We Rest" in its beak.

Due to very controversial views regarding the design of the Parliament under Governor Frank M. Dixon in 1939 eventually led again the old seal.
