The state seal is found modified again on the blue cloth of the state flag.

The seal with the single jaw goes back to a seal from the period 1777 to 1791, when Vermont for several years was an independent state (Vermont Republic). The current seal dates from the year 1821 and symbolized the "Green Mountain State ", the "Green Mountain State ", a reference to the original French name " Les Verts Monts " " ( Green Mountains ), which means as much as the Green Mountains.
