Seal of Delaware

The Seal of Delaware was first established on 17 January 1777 with the current version dates from 29 April 2004.

Description

The seal consists of the coat of arms of the state, which is surrounded by an inscription.

In the center of a shield, which in three horizontal strips (red, blue and white) is divided. On the red stripe one sees a sheaf of wheat and a corn cob. The lower white stripe represents an ox on a grass surface dar. Above the shield a sailing ship and below the shield the motto of the state ( Liberty and Independence ). Is flanked to the left of the plate by a farmer and to the right by a soldier.

  • The wheat sheaf was taken from the seal of Sussex County and is the agricultural strength of the state.
  • The corn on the cob was borrowed from the seal of Kent County and to show on what basis the agricultural economy of the state is.
  • The blue stripes on the ox symbolizes the Delaware River, the backbone of the trade and transport of the state.
  • The ox represents the importance of livestock to the economy of the state.
  • The ship is a symbol of the shipbuilding industry in New Castle County and for the intense maritime trade of the state.
  • The farmer with the hoe is the central role played by agriculture in the state.
  • The soldier, a policeman, recognizes the important role of the Citizens for the Preservation of the American freedoms.
  • The motto, " Liberty and Independence", was provided by the Order of the Cincinnati.

The surrounding the coat of arms inscription reads: "Great Seal of the State of Delaware " and the annual figures 1704, 1776 and 1787.

  • The Delaware Colony resulted in a 1704 the General Assembly;
  • At the so-called separation Day, 15 June 1776, the General Assembly Delaware declared an independent state.
  • December 7, 1787: On this day, the Delaware Day, Delaware ratified the Constitution of the United States, making it was the first state who did this.

History

The seal was originally adopted in 1777 and modified slightly in each of the years 1793, 1847 and 1907. The current version was officially introduced in 2004.

  • Between 1793 and 1847, the figures of the soldier and the farmer were redeemed from the seal.
  • In 1847, the motto " Liberty and Independence " is inserted on a red ribbon below the shield.
  • In 1907, the seal was modernized and was changed "THE DELAWARE STATE" in "THE STATE OF DELAWARE ".
