Contigliano

Contigliano is a municipality in the province of Rieti in the Italian region Latium, located about 3614 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). It is located 83 km north of Rome and 10 km west of Rieti.

Geography

Contigliano located in the Sabine mountains above the valley of the Velino. The old town is on a hill to the valley advanced. Most of the modern town lies at his feet in the valley. It is a member of Mountain Community Monte Piano Reatino.

The districts of Contigliano are Collebaccaro, MONTISOLA, San Filippo and Terria.

The nearby towns of Casperia, Colli sul Velino, Cottanello, Greccio, Rieti and Montasola.

Traffic

Contigliano Located on the Strada Statale SS 79 Ternana that leads from Rieti to Terni. The community also has a station on the railway line Terni - Sulmona.

History

The place has its origins in ancient times as the estate of the Roman family Quinctilius. 770 a locus Quintiliani is first mentioned. 1157 is a fortified village, the Castellum Quintiliani assured that secures the output of the valley of Rieti. In the 15th century it became the property of the Sforza family, what the city of Rieti provoked that no longer saw their territory under its control. 1501 succeeded the soldiers of Rieti under the command of Vitelozzo Viteli take the fortress. This event represented a serious setback for Contigliano which thereafter counted only 90 inhabitants. As a result, it told the story of Rieti.
