Poggio Moiano

Poggio Moiano is a municipality with 2796 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Rieti in the Italian region of Lazio.

Geography

Poggio Moiano is located 60 km northeast of Rome and 29 km south of Rieti. It is located in the Sabine mountains above the Valley of Farfa. The municipality belongs to the district Cerdomare and the southern part of Osteria Nuova. The northern part belongs to Frasso Sabino. The municipality covers an altitude difference 325-1125 m slm Poggio Moiano is a member of the Comunità Montana dei Monti Sabini.

The southeastern part of the township is part of the Parco Naturale dei Monti Lucretili.

The municipality is located in the seismic zone 2 (medium endangered).

The neighboring municipalities are Colle di Tora, Frasso Sabino, Monteleone Sabino, Poggio Nativo, Pozzaglia Sabina, Rocca Sinibalda, Scandriglia and Torricella in Sabina.

Traffic

Poggio Moiano lies with his district Osteria Nuova on the Via Salaria SS 4 which leads from Rome over Ascoli Piceno to the Adriatic coast at Porto d' Ascoli. The nearest motorway exit Roma Nord is on the A1 Autostrada del Sole in 33 km distance.

The nearest railway station is located in Passo Corese at the regional railway line FR1 from Rome Fiumicino Airport via Rome Tiburtina to Orte, 25 km away.

History

The place was probably built after the destruction of Trebula Mutuesca in the 9th century. In 1037 he was first mentioned as fundus Mongianus in a document of the Abbey of Farfa.
