Antrodoco

Antrodoco is a municipality in the province of Rieti in the Italian region Latium, located about 2684 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012). It is located 97 km northeast of Rome and 23 km east of Rieti.

Geography

Antrodoco lies in the valley of the Velino, at the point where the river leaves the impressive Gole del Velino ( Velino gorges ). It is a member of the Comunità Montana del Velino.

Traffic

Antrodoco located on the Via Salaria (SS 4), which leads from Rome to the Adriatic. In the city the Via Sabina (SS 17) branches off, which leads to L'Aquila and on to Foggia. The city also lies on the railway line Terni - Sulmona.

History

Antrodoco goes back to the ancient settlement Interocrium ( in Sabinischer language village between the mountains). She was an important junction on the Via Salaria. Inscriptions which have now hanging in the church of Santa Maria Extra moenia indicate Interocrium.

Policy

Maurizio Faina (right Citizens' List ) was elected in April 2008 to the mayor. He was already 1992-2004 Mayor of Antrodoco. His list also provides 8 out of 12 seats, the majority in the City Council.

Attractions

  • The church of Santa Maria Extra moenia dates back to the 5th century. The church and especially the built in 9th century baptistery contain significant frescoes of the 15th century.
