Posta, Lazio

Posta is a municipality with 714 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012) in the province of Rieti in the Italian region of Lazio.

Geography

Posta is located 112 km northeast of Rome, 67 km south-west of Ascoli Piceno and 37 km north-east of Rieti. It lies in the valley of the Velino, surrounded by the mountains of Abruzzo Reatinischen. South of the town, the river pours into the impressive Gole del Velino ( Velino gorges ). Posta is a member of the Comunità Montana del Velino.

The municipality covers an altitude difference of 557-2081 meters above sea level. The municipality consists of the villages Bacugno, Favischio, Figino, Fontarello, Picciame, sigillo, Steccato and Villa Camponeschi.

The municipality is located in the seismic zone 1 ( high risk ).

The neighboring municipalities are Borbona, Cittareale, Leonessa, Micigliano and Monte Reale ( AQ).

Traffic

The municipality of Posta is crossed by the Via Salaria SS 4, which leads from Rome over Ascoli Piceno to the Adriatic coast at Porto d' Ascoli.

The nearest railway station is on the railway line Antrodoco Terni - Sulmona, 15 km away.

History

At the site of the present hamlet Bacugno was the ancient Forum Decii.

The present town Posta takes its name from the fact that he was actually coaching inn on the Via Salaria.
