Torricella in Sabina

Torricella in Sabina is a municipality with 1380 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Rieti in the Italian region of Lazio.

Geography

Torricella is located 63 km northeast of Rome and 19 km south of Rieti. It is located in the Sabine hills between the valleys of the Turano and Farfa. The municipality consists of the villages of Oliveto and Ornaro. The municipality covers an altitude difference of 350-825 m asl Torricella is a member of the Comunità Montana dei Monti Sabini.

The municipality is located in the seismic zone 2 (medium endangered).

The neighboring municipalities are Belmonte in Sabina, Casaprota, Monteleone Sabino, Sabino Monte Nero, Poggio Moiano, Poggio San Lorenzo, Rieti and Rocca Sinibalda.

History

Torricella was first mentioned in 1019 in a document of the Abbey of Farfa.

Torricella lies with his district Ornaro on the Via Salaria SS 4 which leads from Rome over Ascoli Piceno to the Adriatic coast at Porto d' Ascoli. The nearest motorway exit Roma Nord is on the A1 Autostrada del Sole, 38 km away.

The nearest railway station is located in Passo Corese at the regional railway line FR1 from Rome Fiumicino Airport via Rome Tiburtina to Orte, 30 km away.
