Montopoli di Sabina

Montopoli di Sabina is a municipality with 4243 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Rieti in the Italian region of Lazio.

Geography

Montopoli is situated 51 km north of Rome and 39 km southwest of Rieti.

The municipality is bounded on the west and south of the rivers Tiber and Farfa. To the northeast it extends into the hills of the Sabine Mountains. The municipality covers an altitude difference of 26-680 m slm

The municipality consists of the villages Bocchignano, Casenove, Colonnetta La Memoria, Ferruti, Granari, Granica Montopoli di Ponte Sfondato, Ponticchio and Santa Maria.

The municipality is located in the seismic zone 2 (medium endangered).

The neighboring municipalities are Castelnuovo di Farfa, Fara in Sabina, Fiano Romano (RM ), Monte Libretti (RM ), Nazzano (RM ), Poggio Mirteto, Salisano and Torrita Tiberina (RM ).

Traffic

Montopoli is located on the strada stadale SS 313, which leads from the highway exit Roma Nord on the A1 Autostrada del Sole to Terni. The nearest train station is in Poggio Mirteto Scalo at the regional railway line FR1, 7 km from the center.

History

Montopoli 1055 was first mentioned in a document of the Abbey of Farfa.
