Doullens

Doullens is a commune with 6689 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Somme in the Picardie region. It belongs to the district Amiens, capital of the canton Doullens and seat of the municipal association Communauté de communes du Doullennais.

Geography

The northern French community Doullens is located at the headwaters of authie, approximately in the middle of the city triangle Amiens -Arras - Abbeville.

History

Doullens was the seat of the Viscounts of Vermandois and later Ponthieu ( Hare ).

In 1225 Doullens came under the jurisdiction of the French king.

In 1475 the city was Louis XI. burned because they stood on the side of the Duke of Burgundy. In 1523 the city was besieged by English -Burgundian troops, but defended steadfastly. 1595 the city was taken after a siege by the Spaniards, but was in 1598 by the Peace of Vervins back to France.

Under Francis I in 1530 started the construction of a citadel by De Costello. The fort was one of the first of its kind in France. The citadel of Doullens served as a prison for various men as Auguste Blanqui, Armand Barbès and François -Vincent Raspail. In the 50s of the 20th century, the attachment served as a women's prison. In the film, Astragalus with Horst Buchholz ( 1968), the prison is a place of action.

In 1898 built on the site of a monastery Saint Michel City Hall was on March 26, 1918 Foch, at that time General, promoted to sole commander of the Allied forces on the Western Front, and thus marshal.

The former municipality with its Belfry ( Belfort German ) from the 15th century is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005.

Doullens maintains since 1976 a city partnership with Much in Germany.
