The Honda CX 500 was an offered 1978-1986 middle-class motorcycle in the category Tourer by the Japanese manufacturer Honda. The drive was carried out by a bumper 80 ° V engine with four valves per cylinder and longitudinal crankshaft and shaft drive. The CX 500 was the first production motorcycle, could be used on tubeless tires.

The model is considered to be very reliable and has been built in many versions. Ranging from the "standard" CX -500 (in Japan due to former licensing requirements CX 400) via the C "Custom" CX 500 C (CX 400 C) and CX 650 C, the GL 500 and GL 650 "Silver- Wing" - models ( as little " sisters " of the Gold Wing GL 1100 whose full fairing and tail light took over ), the CX 500 e and CX 650 E " euro Sport" and so far only Honda motorcycles with exhaust gas turbocharger, the CX 500 Turbo and CX 650 Turbo.

Nickname

The CX / GL 500 is also known by her nickname " slurry pump ": When the Honda CX 500 was introduced in 1977, it was a very modern motorcycle. Water cooling, electronic ignition and low-maintenance shaft drive were not widespread at the time. The comic artist Rötger Feldmann, who bolted to old Horex Regina models, made fun of this form of "modern" bikes. Water cooling was unnecessary in his eyes for a reasonably -designed motorcycle. In his " Werner " comics he took up this idea ironically: There the coolant pump circulation of such Honda will substitute for pumping liquid animal excrements, just the manure converted.

The special features of construction, it is one that the cylinders have separate ignition systems. Rotated by the installation of the engine ( with transversely instead of successively arranged cylinder heads ) at the front has a large cooler box will be placed. Due to the counter-rotating the crankshaft coupling occurs when accelerating and decelerating a low stall torque.

  • Valve clearance intake 0.10 mm ( 0.08 mm originally specified, later corrected by Honda for all CX and GL 500 models with naturally aspirated )
  • Valve clearance outlet 0.12 mm ( 0.10 mm originally specified, later corrected by Honda for all CX and GL 500 models with naturally aspirated )

Influences

The engine was originally developed with a cylinder bank angle of 90 °, comparable to the engines from Moto Guzzi. However, in tests, the design proved an obstacle to the driver, in particular for the position of the knee. Hence the cylinders were made stronger by 10 ° and the cylinder heads turned by 22 ° to the inside, ultimately a characteristic because unique feature of the delivered engine.

A number of ideas to the engine to have role models in Marusho Lilac. Marusho was a small Japanese motorcycle manufacturer had created some innovative models since inception in 1948, but in 1967 went into bankruptcy. As a result, the developers stayed with other Japanese motorcycle manufacturers.

The engine of the CX500/650-Modelle was also used in various small car / Kit -Cars, including:

  • BRA Three Wheeler ( CX3 ) of aero cars and motorcycle
  • Jzr

In addition, the engine changes from 1980 to 1982 in the United States as the engine of a racing motorcycle was ( " Flat Tracker ") is used, the NS 750

In addition to the GL models as actual successors of the CX series had visible impact on the design of the Honda ST 1100 Pan European. The Pan European also has a V engine with outward-facing cylinder heads, but with four instead of two cylinders. The short length of the CX engine gave here the incentive to put two of these basic constructions in succession, but was otherwise developed independently.

Fan base

These motorcycles have become more active regional and national fan bases, which are now committed to, long after the end of production, for the preservation of these machines. Numerous CX- clubs around the world care about the preservation of CXen and GLs. Every year they organize meetings with lively experience. A Danish club and a Briton have since begun to rebuild obsolete spare parts.
