List of cities in Iran

The list of major cities in Iran provides an overview of the development of the population of the larger cities of the Near Eastern state of Iran.

By far the largest metropolitan area in Iran is Tehran, with a population of 13,413,348 (as of October 25, 2006 ). Thus, about 20 percent of the country's people live in the capital region.

The following table lists the cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants, whose name in German transcription and in Persian, as well as the results of the census of 22 September 1986, September 11, 1991, October 25, 1996 and 25 October 2006. Credited is also the province to which the city belongs. The population figures refer to the city in its political boundaries, without politically independent suburbs.
