Portomarín

Portomarín is a place and a municipality on the outskirts of the pilgrimage in the province of Lugo of the Autonomous Community of Galicia (Spain). History

The construction of the first bridge over the Miño goes back to the Romans. She joined in the second century for the first time structurally the opposite on the two banks of districts (later named San Pedro, left bank, and San Xoán, right bank ) drew later the pilgrims to Porto Marin and let it become a pilgrimage main station. First mentioned in a document of the place is in the year 792 as " Portumarini ".

Thanks to the increasing number of pilgrims it prospered and developed the greatest luster from the 10th to the 12th century. The importance Porto Marins in the Middle Ages underline the points equal to three orders of knights, who were in the city: on the left bank of the Miño Santiagoritter and the Knights Templar had settled on the right bank of the Hospitallers. The warlike character of these orders is reflected today still resist in the fortified church of Saint John ( or San Nicolás ), which today is located in the center of the new Porto Marin.

1956 began the construction of the forty kilometers away, dam of Belesar Reservoir, the water would flood the place. Portomarín has therefore been re-erected on the terraces of Monte Cristo do on the right bank of the Miño. The old Portomarín disappeared under the rising waters of the dam Belesar and becomes visible again only at very low water levels. Demolished and rebuilt in the new place were the churches of San Nicolás and San Pedro (portal front ), an arch of medieval bridges ( Christina arc ) and the palace of the Count Maza, 16th century, and the Pimentales also called Berbeteros, 17th century. , both in what is now the center standing.

Festivals

Every year on Easter Sunday, the Fiesta de aguardiente ( brandy festival) is celebrated with a Schaub race and the choice of the best Pomace - distiller here.
