Prettau

Prettau (Italian: Predoi ) is a municipality with 588 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012) in Campo Tures in South Tyrol (Italy). It is in the rearmost portion of the Ahr valley and forms the northernmost town in Italy. 70 % of its territory located in the Rieserferner Ahrn. The municipality consists of the main village and the hamlet Prettau Kasern.

Name

The name of the village Prettau derives from " width Au " from, that of Kasern from the Old High German word " Kasari (< Latin casarium ) " = Alm or chalet - based on the present there roadhouse Kasern (now Berghotel Kasern ). Furthermore, among Prettau nor the mountain pastures Prastmann with the Sanctuary of the Holy Spirit and Trinkstein.

Geography

Prettau, the northernmost town in Italy, located in the extreme north-east of South Tyrol in the rearmost portion of the Aurina Valley. Prettau bordered to the north, east and southeast of Austria ( North Tyrol, Salzburg, Tyrol ), but separated from the latter by high mountain ridges of the Zillertal Alps and the Venediger. Developed for the road the church is only by the valley road, in the Val Pusteria Brunico in the room takes its beginning and Prettau reached from the southwest, where a constriction of the Aurina Valley, gorge called, forms the border with the neighboring community Ahrntal.

The settlement area of 86.49 km ² municipal area are concentrated in the valley, especially in the capital Prettau ( 1450-1490 m asl ) and in the hamlet Kasern ( 1570-1610 m) in the valley, near the sources of the Ahr.

The northern boundary is the Prettaus across from west trending main ridge of the Zillertal Alps to the Birnlücke ( 2665 m) - the transition to Venedigergruppe - dar. The highest peak in Prettau proportion of the main ridge is the Rauhkofel ( 3251 m). To the east of Krimml Tauern ( 2634 m) bulges the ridge line slightly to the North: Here are the Klockerkarkopf ( 2,911 m ), the Western ( 2835 m ) and the Eastern Zwillingsköpfl ( 2841 m) is the northernmost points in Italy.

In the east and south Prettau is framed by mountains of Venedigergruppe. The Dreiherrenspitze ( 3499 m) and the Rötspitze ( 3496 m) in this mountain range is the highest peak on Municipality. West of the ox Lenke ( 2614 m) - a transition into the Valle Reintal (municipality Campo Tures ) - has Prettau even a small proportion of the Durreck Range.

About 70 % of the municipal area are provided in Rieserferner Ahrn under protection.

Economy

Major industries are agriculture, forestry and tourism.

Prettau is known beyond the lace-making and the mask carving. After the mine was closed in 1893, poverty and turned back to the village and the population had to look for a new purchase option. The then minister Franz Klein Lechner sent three young girls Prettau to Vienna to learn the clapper craft. After these came back, a lace school was established by Mrs. Rosa Kofler Mittermair, which still exists today.

With time came through the burgeoning tourism again a degree of prosperity to the village. Today Prettau with his group Kasern thanks to its favorable location at the head of the valley is a popular starting point for ski tours and with his " Sonnenloipe " an estimated cross-country area.

Visitor Mine

Possibly as early as the Bronze Age, but certainly since the late Middle Ages was operated in Prettau copper mining. Parts of the 1960 discontinued mine now serve as a show mine of South Tyrol Museum of Mining. In addition, a Heilklimastollen for respiratory therapies ( Speleotherapy ) was set up to treat asthma and other respiratory diseases. The tunnel is now shut down, its special microclimate can provide people with respiratory problems relief.

Attractions

The Knapp church Holy Spirit, located in the valley, was inaugurated in 1455 by Cardinal Nicholas of Cusa, the then Bishop of Brixen. It was also attended by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms was granted in 1967. The miner hammers are related to the ancient copper mining.
