Puurs is a municipality in the Belgian province of Antwerp. It includes the villages of Breendonk, Kalfort, Liezele, Ruisbroeck and Puurs.

Location and infrastructure

The community is located just a few kilometers ( miles) south of the mouth of the Rupel in the Scheldt. Mechelen is located 15 km south-east, 18 km north of Antwerp and Brussels, about 26 km south. The next highway exits are located in the east at Rumst and Mechelen on the A1 / E 19 and at Sint -Niklaas in the west on the A14 / E 17 The community has a regional station on the railway line Sint- Niklaas - Puurs - Mechelen. Antwerp airport is the nearest regional airport near the capital Brussels National is an international airport.

History

In the 10th century the Benedictine monks of the Abbey Kornelimünster in Aachen were the rulers.

Attractions

The Sint- Pieterskerk, also called " Cathedral of Klein-Brabant ", was built in the 15th century in the Romanesque style. Your baroque bell tower dates from the late 17th century.

The area around Kalfort is known for its locally grown asparagus.
