Romainmôtier

Romainmôtier -Envy is a municipality in the district of Jura-Nord Vaudois in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland. The municipality was created in 1970 by the merger of the previously independent villages Romainmôtier and Envy. The former German name Roman Münster for Romainmôtier is no longer used today.

Geography

The double municipality Romainmôtier -Envy is located 6 km southwest of Orbe and 17 km southwest of the district capital Yverdon- les- Bains ( straight line ). Romainmôtier ( 674 m above sea level. M. ) extends into the narrow Talniederung of the river Nozon, at the exit from the Jura. Envy is located at 691 m above sea level. M. in a short south-facing side of the Nozon, also the Jura foothills.

The area of ​​7.0 km ² large, highly branched municipal area includes a portion of the Jura plateau. The northern part of the area is occupied by the narrow valley of the Nozon that is dug up to 100 m in the plateau of the Jura plateau. To the west of the municipality floor in Nozontal extends well into the Jurassic and reached the north slope of Mollendruz chain with 910 m above sea level. M. the highest point of Romainmôtier -Envy. North of the valley is the forest area Bois de Forel (up to 770 m above sea level. M. ). From the municipality surface 1997 accounted for 5% of settlements, 68 % of forest and woody plants and 27% to agriculture.

To Romainmôtier -Envy include some individual farms. Neighboring communities of Romainmôtier -Envy are Premier, Bretonnières, Bofflens, Croy, La Sarraz Ferreyres, Moiry, Juriens and Vaulion.

Population

With 487 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Romainmôtier -Envy is one of the small communities of the Canton of Vaud. Of the 91.0% inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 5.3 % and 2.1 % Italian-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Romainmôtier -Envy amounted in 1900 to 480 inhabitants. It was then recorded until 1960, a decrease by about a third to 331 inhabitants. Only since 1980 (342 inhabitants) a slight upward trend was observed again.

Economy

Romainmôtier -Envy was once a predominantly agricultural village embossed. Today, the agriculture and forestry play only a marginal role in the occupational structure of the population.

Since the 19th century, the water power of the Nozon of several mills was used. In 1900 there were in Romainmôtier a brickyard, a textile machinery factory and a Feilenschleiferei ( until 1928 ). Today, the community derives its income from tourism and crafts. Almost 70 % of the workforce are employed also for the tertiary sector. Romainmôtier -Envy has a center for photographic craft and a nursing home.

Traffic

The community is located off the major thoroughfares on a link road from Orbe via Croy after Vaulion and over the Jura pass Petra Félix in the Vallée de Joux. By Postbus course, which runs from Croy after Vaulion, Romainmôtier is connected to the public transport network. Another bus line serves the route Croy - Romainmôtier- La Praz- L'Isle. Approximately 1.5 km east of Romainmôtier closest train station Croy - Romainmôtier on the railway line Lausanne- Vallorbe. The northern part of the station area is also located in the municipality of Romainmôtier -Envy.

History

The territory of Romainmôtier -Envy was already inhabited in Roman times. Evidence from this period are the remains of the iron-melting furnace in Bellaires forest south-east of the village. Two furnaces from the 6th century have been preserved.

The further history of Romainmôtier is closely related to that of the monastery Romainmôtier, founded, according to tradition, in the 5th century. The name Romanis monasterium first appears around the middle of the 8th century in the documents. Next to the monastery which gave rise to a settlement that benefited from the heyday of the monastery from the 11th to the 15th century. In the 13th century came Romainmôtier in the sphere of influence of the Dukes of Savoy.

With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the monastery was secularized, and pulled the monastic estates of Bern. As a result, Bern built the Bailiwick Romainmôtier who was the richest Bailiwick of Waadtland next to Lausanne. It comprised the area of Romainmôtier, handed in the north to the Orbe, in the south to La Sarraz and Cuarnens, also included the exclaves Apples and Bursins it. Also the entire Vallée de Joux was part of the Bailiwick of Romainmôtier. 1589 Romainmôtier received the title of city.

After the collapse of the ancien régime the place from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic belonged to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 Romainmôtier was assigned to the district of Orbe. The former bailiwick territory was divided between the districts of Orbe and Cossonay while the Vallée de Joux since then forms its own district.

On January 1, 1970, the two previously independent municipalities were merged Romainmôtier and Envy and since then form the double municipality Romainmôtier -Envy. Envy, which was first mentioned in 1216 under the name Envi, counted 45 inhabitants in 1960 and is today a farming village.

Attractions

The most important attraction of the village is the Romanesque collegiate church of the former monastery Romainmôtier. From the 14th century the clock tower dates back to the west of the Collegiate Church, which once formed the gate in the the monastery. Next to the tower is erected in 1685 the house of Lieutenant Baillival, the Bailiwick governor was. In the village some stately houses from the 16th to 18th centuries have been preserved, including the House Glayre and rectory of 1746. Since 1986, is located in the so-called monk's house the monastery museum.
