Roman Catholic Diocese of Perpignan-Elne

The Diocese of Perpignan - Elne (Latin: Dioecesis Elnensis ) is located in the south of France diocese of the Roman Catholic church located in Perpignan.

History

Elne French town in the department of Pyrénées- Orientales, since the 6th century was a bishopric. By Pope Clement VIII, the bishopric was renamed in 1601 under Bishop Onofre Reart to the diocese of Perpignan - Elne and subordinated to the Metropolitan Diocese of Narbonne. On November 29, 1801, diocese was abandoned with the Concordat of 1801 of Pope Pius VII and assigned to the diocese of Carcassonne.

Pius VII in 1822 founded the bishopric of Perpignan - Elne again; Bishop was Jean -François de Saunhac - Belcastel. In 2002 it was assigned by John Paul II, the Metropolitan Bishopric of Montpellier.
