Samuel L. Bestow

Samuel Lucius Bestow ( born March 8, 1823 in Williamsville, New York, † January 10, 1907 in Chariton, Iowa ) was an American politician. Between 1892 and 1894 he was Deputy Governor of the State of Iowa.

Career

Bestow Samuel grew up on a farm in upstate New York. For many years he worked there, even in agriculture. During the Civil War he was excluded for health reasons from active military service. He served in the military administration, where he was involved in government procurements. After the war he worked in the craft. He ran a paper mill. He also worked in wood and iron goods business. Was Bestow School Board and District Council Chairman in his New York home. In 1869 he moved to Iowa, where he built a new farm in Lucas County. Politically he belonged first to the Republican Party. Between 1875 and 1880 he sat in the Senate of Iowa. Later he moved to the Democrats.

Bestow 1892 was elected to the side of Horace Boies for Lieutenant Governor of Iowa. This post he held 1892-1894. Yet he was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. He was the first politician of the Democratic Party, who held this post in Iowa. The next Democrat in that office, Nelson G. Kraschel, followed only in 1933. Bestow Samuel died on January 10, 1907 in Chariton.
