Tom Steed

Thomas Jefferson " Tom" Steed ( born March 2, 1904 at the Eastland County, Texas, † June 8, 1983 in Shawnee, Oklahoma ) was an American politician. Between 1949 and 1981 he represented the fourth electoral district of the state of Oklahoma in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Tom Steed was born on a farm near the village Rising Star in Texas. He attended the public schools in Konawa (Oklahoma) and was then for 20 years in the newspaper business. During this time he was also responsible for four years editor of the newspaper " News and Star Shawnee ". During World War II he served as a soldier in the U.S. Army. From July 1944 to December 1945 he was in East Asia in the area of India and Burma, in a message unit.

Steed was a member of the Democratic Party. As their candidate, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington in 1948 and appeared there on January 3, 1949, the successor of Glen D. Johnson at. After he was confirmed in each case in the next 15 elections, he could implement his mandate in Congress in 16 legislative sessions until January 3, 1981. During the 94th Congress ( 1975-1976 ), he was Chairman of the Committee on Small Business.

In 1980, Steed gave up another nomination and withdrew into retirement, which he spent in Shawnee, where he died in 1983.
