The Vogtland Arena is a ski jumping facility at Black Mountain in Klingenthal, Saxony.

History

Klingenthal applied as the venue for the Olympic Winter Games in 1936. As part of this application a ski jump on the northern slopes of the Black Mountain was to be built in roughly where today stands the Vogtland Arena. The first designs for the project was provided by the producer Howard Willie Meisel on March 13, 1932. He planned the establishment of a large hill, which should have a focal length of 110 m and a K - point of 150 m. The "Firecracker Lair" would thus have been by far the biggest jump in the world, because the world record in 1932 was still at 82 meters. However, the Olympic Games were awarded to Garmisch -Partenkirchen and thus the plans rejected again.

In May of 1957 began in Klingenthal the construction of a ski jump with a K - point of 102 meters. (Also called " Asch " ) The Great Aschbergschanze on Aschberg was officially opened on 1 February 1959, a jump of Harry Glaß. The first competition in 1959 won Helmut Recknagel front of about 70,000 spectators. The first World Cup competition at the Aschbergschanze 1986 should also be the last. It won the Finn Matti Nykänen, Klaus Ostwald was fourth. On September 26, 1990, the start tower and the runway were blown up due to the dilapidated state of the hill. Thus, there was until the construction of Vogtlandarena no big ski jump more Klingenthal.

From 2003 to 2005, the Vogtlandarena was built and officially opened on 27 August 2006 as part of the Summer Grand Prix of Nordic Combined. The first competition already took place before the official opening in February 2006, as here, the Czech Championship was held in ski jumping. In March 2006, a B- Nordic Combined World Cup was held in September 2006, a ski-jumping Grand Prix. On 7 February 2007, the VSC Klingenthal took over a failed competition of the Ski Jumping World Cup in Harrachov, who was thus the first winter competition of the FIS Ski Jumping in the arena. Also in the summer of 2007, a competition of the Ski Jumping Grand Prix took place. In January 2008, the first time a World Cup Nordic Combined in Klingenthal was aligned. Between 2009 and 2013 four competitions of the FIS Team Tour took place in the Vogtland Arena. In 2012, the competition of the third FIS Team Tour fell in Klingenthal out due to the strong wind.

In the 2013/2014 season will be held on 23 and 24 November 2013 the Vogtlandarena the opening of the World Cup season of ski jumpers instead.
