Widensolen

Widensolen (Alsatian Widsole, IPA: [ ʋi tso ː ː lə ]; until 1999 officially Widensohlen ) is a commune with 1223 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the Alsace region in the department of Haut-Rhin. Located in the canton Andolsheim village is a member of the Association of Municipalities Pays de Brisach.

Geography

The place is located six kilometers northwest of Neuf- Brisach and eight kilometers east of Colmar in the Rhine valley at the end of the coming of Neuf- Brisach Canal de Widensolen, which serves as a derivation of the Canal Vauban. The road to two kilometers northern Urschenheim runs along an old Roman road.

History

The most important discoveries of prehistoric times to the Widensoler district were 1909 copper bullion ribs from the Bronze Age ( 1800-1500 BC) in a village garden, which are unique for the whole of Alsace.

From the Iron Age ( 750-620 BC) grave mounds ( tumuli ) are known, where pottery and an urn were found. Numerous discoveries prove the settlement in the Roman period.

The village is first mentioned in a charter of 768 as part of a donation of a Wido and 940 mentioned as Widosolica. The name takes well to those Wido reference.

In the High Middle Ages, the village was part of the reign of Horburg before it came from 1324 to 1789 under the rule of Württemberg. With the introduction of the Reformation in 1535 in Württemberg therefore Widensolen was Protestant. 1687 changed the supremacy of the German Empire to Catholic France, which is why Catholicism had to be allowed back in place, despite continued until 1789 simultaneous affiliation to Protestant Württemberg. 1871, the place like the entire Alsace fell back to Germany. 1875, the church name was changed to Wieden soles, with the return to France in 1919 and 1999 Widensohlen finally Widensolen.

At the beginning of the 20th century, small-scale industry moved to the place. In June 1940, the population was evacuated to France after the German attack after Puymiclan in the department of Lot- et- Garonne and returned three months later after the German occupation of France by Germany annexed Alsace now in back. On the night of January 31, 1945 Widensolen was then liberated by American troops of the Nazi regime.
