Zirl, Tyrol

Zirl is a market town with 7802 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Innsbruck Land, Tyrol ( Austria ). The municipality is located in the judicial district Telfs.

Geography

Location

Zirl is located at the southwestern end of the Karwendel Mountains, about 10 km west of Innsbruck in the Inn Valley at the Südostfuß Zirler mountain ( 1057m ). It lies on the north bank of the Inn on the alluvial fan of Ehnbach and lock stream.

Community structure

The municipality covers not only the main town Zirl nor the about 300 m higher Hochzirl, the Martin wall Ehnbachklamm and part of the northern chain of the 2,637 m high little Solstein. The district Zirl Station is the only south of the Inn. Eigenhofen and Dirschenbach are two westernmost from the village hamlet on the old highway.

History

On the Martinsbühel a settlement from the La Tène period is detected. In 4/5 Century was here the Roman military station Teriolis, which was expanded into a hunting lodge under the Roman- German king and later Emperor Maximilian I in 1500. The Kaiser-Max- grotto / cave wall Martin recalls that here Maximilian I. is said to have extravagant end of the 15th century in the Gämsenjagd.

Zirl was a major transport hub on the Roman road Via Raetia to Augsburg. Here began the steep ascent to the saddle Seefeld, the course of which, however, is no longer unique to clarify today. The community was first documented in October 28 799

In 1826 significant Tyrolean church painter Franz Plattner was born in Zirl. He died in 1887 in Innsbruck.

From 1910 to 1912, the Mittenwald railway was built with elaborate buildings, many of which are in Zirl important buildings as the Martin Wall tunnel, the castle creek viaduct Ehnbachklammviadukt and Hochzirl station.

Zirl has connection to the Inn valley motorway with exits Zirl Zirl -West and East.

The station of the Arlberg railway is located southwest of the village, on the opposite riverside, where several industrial and commercial enterprises have settled. Due to the numerous establishments of Zirl railway station is one of the largest freight stations in Tyrol.

The Martin wall east of Zirl offers a challenging fixed rope and many climbing routes.
