1987 Canada Cup

The Canada Cup 1987 ( French Coupe Canada 1987) was the fourth edition of the competition of the same name. He was played in the North American cities of Calgary, Halifax, Hamilton, Hartford, Montreal, Regina and Sydney from 28 August to 15 September 1987. The International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF, the North American professional league National Hockey League and the Canadian Hockey Association Canadian Hockey Association supported the competition.

At the fourth edition of the competition participated in six teams. Canada won the tournament by two final victories in the final series against the USSR, which had won the first game. The second game of the series, which won Canada 6-5 in the second extension, is considered one of the best hockey games ever. The best scorer of the tournament was Canadian Wayne Gretzky with three goals and 21 points. He excelled in a forward line with Mario Lemieux, who came up with eleven goals and 18 points. Gretzky was elected the Most Valuable Player.

The six best teams in the IIHF World Ranking internal participated in the competition.

Mode

The six teams played in the first round in a single round, the rankings from, so each team played five games. For a victory, there were two points with a tie, both teams received one point each. The four best teams in the point group of six qualified for the semifinals.

The two semi-finals were decided in the knockout system, the winners of the semi-finals moved into the finals. The final was in contrast - played in the mode " Best-of- Three" - as in the years 1976 and 1984.

Awards

As Most Valuable Player of the tournament, the Canadian Center Wayne Gretzky was excellent. Gretzky scored in nine tournament games 21 scorer points, including 18 assists. Gretzky was thus directly involved in 21 of the 41 Canadian goals and led the team for the third tournament victory. Together, he occupied a forward line with Mario Lemieux, who was second in the scorers list with 18 points, scoring eleven goals. In addition, both were also appointed to the All- Star team.
