Aragona

Aragona is a city in the province of Agrigento in the Italian region Sicily.

Location and data

Aragona is located 16 km north of Agrigento in the valley of the river Platani. Here live 9528 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012), in agriculture (cereals and fruit) mainly work.

The neighboring municipalities are Agrigento, Campofranco (CL ), Castel Termini, Comitini, Favara, Grotto, Joppolo Giancaxio, Sant'Angelo Muxaro and Santa Elisabetta.

History

Aragona in 1606 by Baldassare III. Naselli founded. The name was chosen in honor of the mother Beatrice Aragona Branciforte. 1615 of the title Prince of Aragona was awarded to Naselli family.

Attractions

Nature reserve Macalube

Macalube are small volcanic crater from which escape sulfuric and methane gas, which causes the air smells of rotten eggs.

In the resort

  • Prince's Palace in Piazza Umberto I in the 17th century. Here, the Town Hall was once housed, which is now to be found in the Via Roma, the main street Aragonas.

  • Parish church of Nostra Signora dei Tre Re

Outside the village

  • Nearby is the town of Aragona Fontanazza. Here the remains of a Roman villa have been found.
  • Salto D' Angio, a village near Aragonas. From here you have a beautiful view of the surroundings.
