Caltabellotta

Caltabellotta is a municipality in the province of Agrigento in the Italian region Sicily, with 3829 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

Caltabellotta is located 63 km northwest of Agrigento at an altitude of 949 m. Agriculture is the main industry of the city. Are produced olives, grapes and citrus fruits.

The neighboring communities of Caltabellotta are Bisacquino (PA ), Burgio, Calamonaci, Chiusa Sclafani (PA ), Giuliana (PA ), Ribera, Sambuca di Sicilia, Sciacca and Villafranca sicula.

The district lies southeast of Sant'Anna Caltabellotta.

History

This was in ancient times the city Sicel Triocala. The city was one of the main squares of the slaves. Later, the city was destroyed by the Romans. The Arabs founded a new city and named it al Qal Baloot ( Qal: Arabic for " rock " and "castle"; Baloot Arabic for the green oak Quercus Baloot, a subspecies of the holm oak ). In Caltabellotta of peace between the Spanish and the French Anjou Aragon was closed on April 19, 1288. After the Sicilian Vespers, had lost in Sicily Anjou, Anjou in 1302 renounced in the peace of Caltabellotta in Sicily.
