Biglen is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Geography

Biglen is located in the upper part of the Bigentals, which belongs to the geographical region of Emmental. In addition to the village, which is drained by the Biglenbach include, the hamlet Änetbach north of the village as well as many groups of houses and farmsteads to the community. With the exception of small forest patches on Enggist, on Adlisberg (highest point of the municipality with 905 m asl ) and at Biglenbach there is no forest land. From the community area of 361 ha 278 ha ( 75.7 %) of agricultural land, 63 ha ( 19.0 %) settlement area, only 18 ha (5.0%) woods and forests and 2 ha ( 0.3 %) non-productive area.

The communities Arni, Grosshöchstetten, Schlosswil, Walk rings and Worb are neighboring communities of Biglen.

Population

Between 1764 and 1850, the population nearly doubled ( 87.9 %). Then it stagnated until 1910, in order subsequently to 1941 to increase greatly ( from 1910 to 1941: 30.3 %). Another growth spurt, there were between 1950 and 1970 ( 18.7 %). After a decline in population in the 1970s, the population grew from 1980 to 2000 ( 24.6% ) to a population peak. Since then stagnated, the number of residents.

Languages

The population speaks a high- Alemannic dialect in everyday life. At the last census in 2000 gave 94.86 % German, 1.45% Italian, and 1.28% of Albanian as their main language.

Religions - faiths

In earlier times, all residents of the Evangelical Reformed Church belonged to. Due to immigration from other regions in Switzerland and abroad, this has changed. Today ( as of 2000) are 81.90 % Evangelical Protestant, 8.88% Roman Catholic, and 0.45 % other Christians. Also there is 2.68% non-religious, Muslims 2.12% and 0.61 % Hindu. 3.35% of the population refused to mention of religion. The Muslims are mostly Turkish, Albanian and Kurdish origin. With the Hindus, there are people of Tamil origin.

Origin - Nationality

On October 31 were from the 1780 population 1,658 Swiss citizens and 122 immigrants from abroad (6.85 %). At the last census 1,656 Swiss nationals were ( = 92.51 %), including 33 doubles citizens. The largest immigrant groups come from Serbia and Montenegro (mostly Albanians ), Italy, Germany, Sri Lanka and Turkey.

Parish council

In the elections of 27 November 2011, the members of the municipal council, the new education and infrastructure committee was elected at the ballot box at a turnout of 45.8 %. The seven elected members of the council are:

The voting shares of the parties at the national elections of 2011 were: SVP 32.6 %, 24.0% BDP, SP 12.2%, FDP 7.4%, 7.2%, GPS, EPP 5.3%, 2.8 glp %, EDU 2.8%, 1.0% PPS, CVP 0.9%.

Economy

Until the 18th century dominated the cereal crops. Since the 19th century, the farmers live mainly from farming. Therefore composed in 1828 a first Talkäserei in Änetbach. Currently there are 21 farms ( in 2000 still 27). In 2001 there were 24 industrial and commercial businesses and 53 service providers. Largest employer is the Bigla AG. Of the ( as of 2000) 690 workers in Biglen 296 locals and 394 commuters. At the same time, among the 973 locals 677 commuters ( 69.6 %).

Traffic

Biglen is on the railway line tuna -Burgdorf -Solothurn BLS and has its own train station. The community is connected by several bus routes with the environment. The place is accessible thanks to the road Konolfingen - Hasle- Rüegsau. The nearest motorway connections are Rubigen and Muri on the A6.

History

In the village of findings has been excavated from the Roman period. In historical times, first mentioned in a document dated July 18, 1236 under the name Biglun. Early on the church came under the rule of the city of Bern. Since 1529 the place to bailiwick Signau, from 1798 to 1803 belonged to the Helvetic district Grosshöchstetten. From 1803 to today, the community forms a part of the district Konolfingen.

Train
