Beginning of the year 1588 announced Pope Sixtus V in the Immensa Aeterni Dei, an apostolic constitution, the constitution of the Holy Congregation of Rites (Latin Sacra Rituum Congregation ), which consisted almost four centuries before it was dissolved in 1969. She set standards for the performance of worship ( Rite ) on; also included the Saints to their tasks. The process of reorganization of the Congregations for the ( overlapping ) areas rites, liturgies, sacraments and the Saints seemed to be complete.

Finally, in mid-1988, 80 years after begun by Pius X. gradual dissolution of the " Congregation of Rites ," John Paul II resulted in the Apostolic Constitution Pastor Bonus, both by him previously divided congregations in a combination, of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments ( Latin Cultu Divino et Disciplina Congregation for Sacramentorum ), and put it ( in Articles 62 to 70 of the constitution ) their tasks.
