Fernitz until the end of 2014 a municipality with 3267 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) south of Graz in the district of Graz-Umgebung in Styria ( Austria ). As part of the municipality of structural reform in Styria it is merged in 2015 with the community Mellach, the new community will be called Fernitz - Mellach. This is based on the Styrian community structure reform law - StGsrG.

She is known especially for the late gothic pilgrimage church of Maria Trost.

Fernitz located 10 km south of Graz on the Mur.

Neighboring communities

History

In the 6th century the Slavs came from the East to the area. The name Fernitz clearly indicates Slavic origin. 1160 was built by the Lords of Pranckh a chapel. 1209 Fernitz is ( = settlement at Föhrenbach ) first mentioned in a charter under the name Vorenze.

1210 confirmed Eberhard II, Archbishop of Salzburg, the decision of the dispute on the membership of the Church to Straßengel. In the deed the Hube of Vorinze is mentioned again. 1482 pledged Emperor Frederick III. the Ungeld father to the village and about, inter alia, to Fernitz annually to a hundred pounds Jörg Pettenböck. The years 1469-1490 were years of terror: the Magyars invaded with great brutality in the country.

1480 has been the church of Emperor Frederick III after the Turkish invasion. built in its present form as a votive church. Since 1 September 1997 Mag Toni Rindler pastor of Fernitz and dean of the deanery Graz - country. With the parish Fernitz are the two branches, the Holy Trinity to Hausmannstätten and St. Jakob in Enzelsdorf connected. 1680 the plague raged in Fernitz and snatched away many residents. At the time, in Fernitz already a schoolhouse, which must have counted among the oldest houses of the village. 1826 were in a fire destroyed the school building and with him 30 houses and 34 outbuildings.

In 2009, a Roman grave was probably a female skeleton and beads, a glass jar and a ceramic cup found in Fernitz. From an associated Roman settlement is not known.

Fernitz exceeded the 3000 population limit in 2006, according to the last official census 2005, there were 2,942 people in Fernitz.

Traffic

Fernitz is conveniently located south of Graz, many major roads are in close community without leading directly through the community.

Road

The Phyrn motorway (A9) can be reached in about 5 km above the junction Kalsdorf (194 ). Although the Southern Motorway (A2 ) passes in close community, but is not directly accessible. The closest connection point is Graz-Flughafen/Feldkirchen (183 ) in about 7 km away.

Also, to the network of former national roads Fernitz is connected well. Thus, the Grazer Straße ( B 67 ) in about 2 km in the neighboring Kalsdorf and Kirchbacher Straße (B 73) in about 2 km to reach the neighboring village Hausmannstätten.

Railway

Fernitz does not have its own railway station. The nearest railway station is located in the neighboring Kalsdorf in about 3 km away and provides access to the Austrian Southern Railway.

Graz Airport is approximately 5 km away.

Maria Trost to Fernitz

Its most famous attraction of the place is the late gothic pilgrimage church of Maria Trost, see the separate article Maria Trost ( Fernitz ).

Archduke Johann Park

1966, a park was through the sewers, landfill and reclamation of the extensive 12,000 sqm marshy village green, in the hitherto effluents were conducted created in the village center. The newly constructed park including fountains of four fountains in a square pool was opened the following year.

In Archduke Johann 1982, the village park received in memory of the " Styrian Prince " its present name: Archduke Johann Park.

In the spring of 2006, the park with hostas - themed gardens has been extended. Among the approximately 200 Funkiensorten about 4000 companion plants has been set. Thus, the Archduke Johann of Austria Park is unique in its kind.

For this effort, the community Fernitz in the years 2004, 2008, 2009 and 2011 Fernitz was voted " most beautiful flower village of Styria ".

Coat of arms

Blazon: About split of green and gold sign foot split; front in gold a blue heraldic lily, green back in a silver coulter. The color green stands here as a symbol of fertility of the Graz field, while the golden color of the " golden ears " embodies. The coulter is the invented in the 19th century " Fernitzer plow " and was an integral part thereof. The blue lily embodies the Virgin Mary, which is also its name to the pilgrimage church of Maria Trost ( Fernitz ).
