Robert Daniel

Robert Williams Daniel, Jr. ( born March 17, 1936 in Richmond, Virginia; † February 4, 2012 in Jupiter, Florida ) was an American politician. Between 1973 and 1983 he represented the state of Virginia in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Robert Daniel attended 1946-1949 the Fay School in Southborough (Massachusetts ) and thereafter until 1954, the Woodberry Forest School in Virginia. Between 1954 and 1958 he studied at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. In 1959 he became an officer in the U.S. Army Reserve. Then he studied until 1961 at Columbia University in New York City. In the following years he worked as a farmer, financial analyst, businessman and teacher. Between 1964 and 1968 he worked for the CIA. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Republican Party launched a political career. In 1972 he was a delegate to the regional Republican convention in Virginia and the Republican National Convention in Miami Beach, to the President Richard Nixon was nominated for re-election.

In the congressional elections of 1972, Daniel was the fourth electoral district of Virginia in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Watkins Moorman Abbitt on January 3, 1973. After four elections he was able to complete in Congress until January 3, 1983, five were legislatures. In this time were, among others, the end of the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal. Daniel was a member of the Armed Services Committee and in some sub-committees. In 1982 he was not re-elected. Between 1984 and 1986 he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense department head in the Ministry of Defence. From 1990 to 1993 he worked in the Department of Energy, where he was head of the intelligence service. For his services he was awarded the National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal.

Later, Daniel managed the Brandon plantation in Virginia, which is one of the oldest existing plantations in the United States. He was a descendant of Governor Edmund Randolph (1753-1813), who was also Foreign Affairs and Minister of Justice of the United States. Robert Daniel died on February 4, 2012 in Jupiter.
