Roman Catholic Diocese of Acqui

The Diocese of Acqui is a Roman Catholic diocese in Italy, based in Acqui Terme. It lies in the civil regions of Piedmont and Liguria. As a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Turin, it belongs to the Church of Piedmont.

History

It is very likely that the diocese of Acqui was founded at the end of the 4th century, at the same time as the diocese of Novara, Turin, Ivrea, Aosta and probably Asti and Alba. The first safe Bishop of Acqui is Ditarius, the - a 1753 inscription found according to - died on 25 January 488. Tradition gives him Deusdedit and Andreas Severus Masimus than predecessors, and also provides for Maiorinus as the first Bishop of Acqui.

Maiorinus probably lived either at the end of the 4th or beginning of the 5th century, the name was often at this time: Augustine of Hippo ( De Haereses, I, 69) mentions two bishops of this name, two more appear as signatories of the letter of Synod of Carthage ( 416) against Pelagius to Pope Innocent I to (Ep. St. August, II, 90). Until the Holy Ritenkongreation (8 April 1628), which forbade the worship of persons who have not been canonized by the Vatican, was Maiorinus the local saint of Acqui.

The Nostra Signora Assunta Cathedral was built from 1034 and consecrated on November 11, 1067 by Bishop Guido.
