Rüeggisberg ( [ ˌ ryə̯kis bɛrɡ ] ) is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Geography

Rüeggisberg lies at 930 m above sea level. Level, 14 km south of the capital of the canton of Bern ( straight line ) and approximately in the middle between Thun and Fribourg. The village stretches a scenic location on a terrace on the southern slope of the Rüeggisbergegg, which belongs to the heights of the length of the mountain, above the Talfurche of Grüenibachs.

The area of ​​35.7 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the pre-Alpine hills west of Aaresenke between Bern and Thun. The area has a large variety of landscapes. The northern part of the municipality is located in the heavily in relief catchment area of the black water. To the south of the municipality spell extends over the Talfurche of Grüenibachs which ensures simple connection between the Schwarzenburgerland and the Aare Valley, on the wooded heights of the Gibelegg (up to 1,055 m above sea level. Far to the south the exclave Nünenenberg located in the headwaters of the Gürbe.   • Wislisau (714 m above sea level. M. ) to the west on the road to Black Castle directly on the municipal boundary ( partly belongs to Rüueschegg )

In addition, include numerous groups of farms and individual farms to Rüeggisberg. Neighboring communities of Rüeggisberg are Niedermuhlern, Toffen, Kaufdorf, Rümligen, Riggisberg, Rüschegg, Schwarzburg, Oberbalm, Blumenstein and Därstetten.

Population

With 1846 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Rüeggisberg belongs to the medium-sized municipalities in the canton of Bern. Of the residents 97.6 % are German, 0.6 % and 0.4 % albanischsprachig speak French ( as of 2000). The population of Rüeggisberg amounted in 1850 to 3156 inhabitants, in 1900 to 2722 inhabitants. At that time was Rüeggisberg terms of population, the largest municipality in the district Seftigen. During the 20th century, the population increased by strong emigration to 1980 continuously for another 35 % on 1739 persons from. Since then, however, a growth of population was recorded again.

Economy

Rüeggisberg was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. Even today, the dairy and cattle breeding and agriculture have an important place in the economic structure of the population. More jobs are in small local manufacturing and services available. In the town there are two cheese factories, farms in the construction industry and the electrical industry, Joinery, sawmills and carpentry and mechanical workshops. In recent decades, the village has developed thanks to its attractive location into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work mainly in the larger towns in the area and the agglomeration of Bern.

Tourism

The region around Rüeggisberg is from a popular recreational and hiking area of Berne and Thun. From the hills offers a splendid view of the foothills of the gantrisch and Stockhornstrasse chain and the Bernese Alps. The watershed on the Nünenenberg is the starting point for hikes in the Gantrisch. In winter, the region is suitable for skiers and cross-country skiing.

Rüeggisberg lies on one of the main roads of the Swiss part of the pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela ( route Thun - Black Castle - Fribourg ). History

The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1076 under the name Roggeresberch; Latinized the name montis richerii is preserved. Later, the names Roquespertum ( 1109 ), Rochersperc ( 1148 ), Ruakersperch ( 1152 ), Ruogersperg ( 1224 ), Rucesperc ( 1228 ) and Rueggisberg ( 1281 ) published. The name goes back to the Old High German personal name Hrodger and therefore means mountain of Hrodger.

Rüeggisberg was built around the first mentioned in the 9th century St Martin's Church and belonged to the territory of the Barons of Rümligen. The history of the village is closely linked with that of the Cluniazenserklosters Rüeggisberg, which was donated by the Barons of Rümligen in 1072. After the monastery and his property was in 1484 incorporated into the cathedral in Bern, Rüeggisberg was assigned to the district court Seftigen. After the collapse of the Ancien Régime (1798 ) belonged Rüeggisberg during the Helvetic Republic to the District Seftigen and from 1803 to Oberamt Seftigen, which was given the status of an office district with the new cantonal constitution of 1831.

Attractions

Landmark Rüeggisberg are the monastery ruins (12th century) of the former Cluniazenserpriorates on a ridge at the southwest entrance. In the village is the St. Martin's Church, which dates back in the core on a foundation of Queen Bertha of Burgundy in the 9th century. Over time, the church was repeatedly remodeled and restored.

In Rüeggisberg and in the various hamlets, there are numerous characteristic farmhouses. Particularly noteworthy is the closed townscape Oberbütschel with its intact Bernese farmhouses from the 17th and 18th centuries. On the mountain lions is a Rudolf von Tavel memorial. The listed buildings include the Ross Bridge and the grave Schwandbach Bridge ( 1933) on a narrow road from Black Castle by Hinterfultigen. Both bridges are reinforced concrete structures, which were designed by Robert Maillart, who was especially famous due to Salginatobelbrücke.
