History

The franchise of Chatham Wheels from the Colonial Hockey League in 1994 from Chatham -Kent, Ontario, to Saginaw, Michigan, relocated and renamed Saginaw Wheels. The greatest success in the six years of its existence reached the team in their inaugural season in 1994/95, as they claimed third place in the West Division in the second playoff round at eventual champions Thunder Bay Senators after they have been in round one who had turned Flint Generals. In the following season they reached again the first playoff round, reached after the first change of name in 1996 in Saginaw LumberKings but then no longer the playoffs.

In the 1998/99 season, the franchise went under the name Saginaw Gears in the United Hockey League, as the league was in 1997, in part. The name was chosen on the basis of an eponymous team, which was active from 1972 to 1981 in the International Hockey League. After they started the season 1999/2000 in Saginaw again, they were after Massillon, Ohio, relocated in December 1999, where they finished the season as Ohio Gears. Subsequently, the franchise was dissolved.
