Saluzzo

Saluzzo ( Piedmontese Salusse, occitan Saluças, französ. Saluces ) is a city in the Italian province of Cuneo in the southwest of the Piedmont region.

The city has 16,800 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) and is located 50 km south of Turin. The patron saint of the city is San Chiaffredo.

Geography

Saluzzo is situated at an average altitude of 395 m above sea level at the foot of a mountain slope, where the Po Valley ( upper reaches of the river) also occurs in the Po Valley. The originating within the Cozie Alps Po flows approximately 3 km north over the city and begins to meander here in the plane.

A portion of the city lies in a flat area, the other on the other hand, some steep slopes. The municipality covers an area of ​​75 km ².

Neighboring communities of Saluzzo are Cardè, Castellar, Lagnasco, Manta, Moretta, Pagno, Revello, Scarnafigi and Torre San Giorgio.

History

From 1142 Saluzzo was a margraviate, first under a Manfred, who was a son of Boniface, Marquis of Savona. The line ended in 1548, when the city and the territory was occupied by the French. As the Marquis were opponents of the House of Savoy and took part in the disputes between France and the Empire, the city was often plagued by war.

Henry IV transferred the county with the Peace of Lyon 1601 Charles Emmanuel I of Savoy.

Attractions
