Sankt Radegund bei Graz (short: St. Radegund Radegund or only ) is a municipality with 2022 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in Styria, at the foot of the Schoeckl about 15 kilometers northeast of Graz.

Geography

Geographical Location

Sankt Radegund bei Graz is located in Graz Hill Country in Eastern Styria, about 15 km north of the provincial capital of Graz. The community is located at the foot of Schoeckl ( 1445 m). Sankt Radegund is located in the headwaters of Rabnitzbaches, a tributary of the Raab.

Within the area are the Zwölferkogel ( 1192 m), Erhard height ( 1049m ) and the High Mountain ( 1048 m) other peaks over 1,000 m.

The municipality comprises the cadastral Rinnegg, St. Radegund and Schoeckl.

Neighboring communities

History

St. Radegund was inhabited in the 6th century by the Slavs. In 1186 appears in the Chronicle on a " church ", a few decades later was also the establishment of the parish of St. Radegund. In the arable parish is founded but noted only 100 years later and also the patron saint of the church is first mentioned in 1295 than this. In a document of the year 1403 for the first time appears the name " Radigundtstarff " on.

St. Radegund as a resort

The healing climate and the radioactive sources of St. Radegund were already known at the time of the monarchy, and so St. Radegund developed into a widely known beyond the borders of cold water and health resort with a sanatorium. As the official founding date is 1841, in which the doctor August Demelius petitioned for permission to guide a water-cure establishment.

Coat of arms

Blazon: Increases divided; top in gold two black wolf heads with red eyes and tongues, down in a golden red wood professionals.

The wolf heads refer to Radegund, the victim of wolves was, according to tradition, the wood Schaff refers to the spa.

Culture and sights

Calvary

The St. Radegund Calvary is one of the most beautiful folk Calvary Austria. The path leads to 22 station chapels, whose building sites were first obtained by rock blasting, up to the Crucifixion and Calvary Church. The second major building houses the " Holy Stairs ", whose 14 rooms with relics marble steps may only be ascended on the knees.

Novystein

Main article: Novystein The Novystein is a 20 meter high obelisk, which stands on a 910m high hill. It was built in 1883 for the spa physician Dr. Gustav Novy and bears the dedication "To the benefactor of many sufferers, the great master Gustav Novy, from grateful spa guests ."

Parish Church

The present parish church is a late Gothic building from the years 1490 to 1513. There are late Gothic frescoes on the side altars and a Gothic net vault on the ceiling in her. The church is dedicated to St Radegund of Wellenburg. The first impression of the parish church suggests that it may be a former military facility.

Source paths

The St. Radegund " source path " Connect 22 in the 19th century combined fountains. Many of the sources contribute name of the noble ladies of the spa company, such as Bertha, Melanie, Catherine source.

The fountain was donated by Madonna Shrine Hungarian Hungarian spa guests from gratitude for cures. It carries a replica of the Hungarian royal crown ( crown of St. Stephen ).

Ehrenfels

The honor rock castle was first mentioned in 1229. She served the honor Felsern (from the family of the lords of Graz) as a residence and to consolidate its possessions to Graz. The ruin is now privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside.

Sports

Sankt Radegund and the Schoeckl form the recreation area of Graz. Within the area are many sports facilities - especially in nature - available: hiking, winter sports, paragliding, horse riding, mountain biking, sledding, downhill riding.

Economy and infrastructure

Traffic

Sankt Radegund is off the major roads. The Weiz Straße (B 72) from Graz to Weiz is about 5 km away. From Graz Sankt Radegund is accessible via a country road. The Phyrn motorway (A9) is about 15 km away, and over the exit Graz -Nord ( 175 ) can be achieved.

In Sankt Radegund there is no train station. Graz Main Train Station is 18 km away.

Distance from Graz Airport is approximately 27 km.

Others

On 2 February 1931, the Austrian rocket pioneer Friedrich Schmiedl has launched the first rocket to the post Schoeckl and transported about 100 letters to Saint Radegund.

The municipality is located to 1430 m altitude, the Stubenberghaus the section Graz of the Austrian Alpine Club.
