Sant'Angelo Muxaro

Sant'Angelo Muxaro is a city in the province of Agrigento in the Italian region Sicily.

Location and data

Sant'Angelo Muxaro located 42 km north of Agrigento. Here live 1424 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012), who mainly work in agriculture. It produces almonds, pistachios, olives and cereals.

The neighboring municipalities are Agrigento Alessandria della Rocca, Aragona, Castel Termini, Cattolica Eraclea, Cianciana, Raffadali, San Biagio Platani and Santa Elisabetta.

History

Even in ancient times, people lived here. It is believed that here Kamikos was an important city of the Sikanen. In the Middle Ages the castle was built - Moscaria. This was captured in 1087 by the Normans. Today's church was founded in 1506.

Attractions

  • Parish church, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin from the 18th century
  • Necropolis with two types of rock chamber tombs:
  • A first type from the 11th - found the 9th century BC, there were bronze knife and bronze daggers and pottery
  • A second type from the period 9 to 5 century BC with large domed tombs (up to 9 m in diameter ), the most important finding from these graves is a gold dish with a relief of a procession of bulls in a circle.
