Scherwiller

Scherwiller (German Scherweiler ) is a commune with 3074 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Bas- Rhin in the Alsace region. It is the center of the Riesling growing wine region Alsace. 67 % of the cultivated vines in Scherwiller are Riesling. Scherwiller belongs to the Communauté de communes de Sélestat.

Attractions

The place has pretty half-timbered houses and Renaissance buildings. The neighborhood Aubach is very picturesque. From 1670 comes the guard tower with bay window and the tithe. 1525 was here a massacre of rebellious peasants ( German Peasants' War ) instead. Is dominated by the ruins Scherwiller Ortenberg and Ramstein.

Regular events

Riesling Festival is held annually in mid August, when all the cellars are open. In July, several days the washerwomen hard at Aubach in the village center instead. The washerwomen washing dishes in their traditional costumes ' dirty laundry ' in a double sense: With lots of singing and short stories the action is demonstrated in the village. For the visitors there Tarte and the famous Riesling from Scherwiller.

The first weekend in September each year the traditional Sentier Gourmand place, a hike from the center through the vineyards of Scherwiller to the best location, the Rittersberg. All winemakers of Scherwiller participate in this gastronomic walk. On eight stations along the route there is one small meal and wines of a varietal of all wineries to taste. The Sentier Gourmand ends at the town hall with a cozy wine festival to the end of the day. Each year, about 3,000 visitors from all over Europe participate in this event.
