The Scottish national football team is in addition to the English national football team is the oldest national football team in the world.

History

The first international match of a Scottish selection was also the first official international match in the history of football: the game between Scotland and led by Cuthbert Ottaway English selection, which took place on November 30, 1872 at the Hamilton Crescent in today's Glasgow's Partick ended in front of around 4,000 spectators with 0:0. The match against Norway ended with a 7:3 for Scotland.

Participation in World Cups

Scotland took part in eight finals, but never stood by the preliminary round and leads the ranking of leaving in the 1st round to. Scotland was the first team eliminated unbeaten at a World Cup (1974). With four finals they met Brazil. This is in addition to the encounter against France Mexico the most common pairing in the first round of World Cup history. In 1986 there were in the game against Uruguay ( Full 0-0) the fastest sending-off: José Batista of Uruguay was sent off after 56 seconds referee Joel Quiniou. Uruguay is also the enemy, against the Scotland the highest ever had to suffer defeat: 1954 lost the Scots against the then reigning world champion with 0:7.

Scotland has so far reached the finals twice, including once at eight and one at 16 participants.

Special

Due to the dark blue jersey color that can be easily confused with black, have contributed to the Scottish team games in which they ran aground with these jerseys, the referee red jerseys before this was also the case with other games, such as at the Football World Cup 1974 in the game against Brazil.
