Splügen Pass

Swiss side from Splügenpass with a view to Teurihorn

The Splügenpass (Italian Passo dello Spluga ) is located at an altitude of 2115 meters and connects Spliigen in Rheinwald in Switzerland in the canton Grisons with Chiavenna in the Italian province of Sondrio and Como lake. Over the pass, the watershed between the Rhine and the Po and the border between Italy and Switzerland runs.

History

The pass was already known to the Romans (probably under the name " Cunus Aureus " - " golden spike " if this has not referred to the Julier Pass Spliigen from " specula ", Latin for " lookout " or from Latin " Speluca " ". cave ", derived ) and apparently was used in the Middle Ages. Today's Street, was built by the Austrians, who ruled at the time in Milan at his own expense and was completed in the summer of 1822. Since the construction of a tunnel through the San Bernardino passport has its earlier meaning largely lost.

In the 19th century there were plans to build a railway line across the Spliigen; However, this failed because of the resistance of the canton of Ticino, which would have been bypassed by it. Finally, the construction of the first Gotthard tunnel was preferred.

In the 1980s, a 46.7 km long Spliigen Base Tunnel, between Thusis and Chiavenna was discussed. It was one of five discussed railway tunnel projects in the Swiss Alps. The project was shelved in favor of the Gotthard and Lötschberg base tunnel.

Gallery

The 312-meter- long avalanche gallery below the summit on the north side was built in 1843 to plans by the Italian engineer Carlo Doneganu and the Grisons engineer Richard La Nicca. After the Second World War, the Splügenpass in winter remained closed; the gallery was taken out of service and bypassed by a new road. In order to prevent an impending disintegration, it was renovated with financial support from the federal government and the canton of Graubünden 2007-2010

Route

The nine -kilometer north ramp of Spliigen from reaching the summit a couple of bends groups, one with six bends behind Spliigen, the other with 15 turns before the pass. There is only the former border station, a restoration or the like does not exist. Noteworthy is the south ramp (SS 36) by the Italian Val San Giacomo: Between the pass and Chiavenna is a distance of about 30 kilometers an altitude of nearly 1,800 meters to overcome. The route goes past the Lago di Montespluga, Madesimo, Lago d' Isola and Campodolcino to Chiavenna. From here, the Lake Como or the Maloja Pass can be reached. The road is paved throughout and expanded two lanes. In winter, the pass is closed.

Others

Not far from the road leads to the historic long-distance hiking trail ViaSpluga on the historic mule track over the Splügenpass.

Not far from the apex region of the pass road was gained at 2100 meters altitude in a quartzite plate shape. This took place at the roofing in the region use. The breakdown is set.
