Steinbrunn-le-Bas

Steinbrunn -le- Bas ( German Niederstein Brunn ) is an Alsatian village with 641 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Haut-Rhin. It belongs to the district Mulhouse, on the Canton Sierentz and community association Pays de Sierentz.

Geography

The community Steinbrunn -le- Bas is located in Sundgau, about ten kilometers south of Mulhouse.

Neighboring communities of Steinbrunn -le- Bas are Bruebach in the North, and Landser Schlierbach in the east, in the southeast Kœtzingue, Rantzwiller in the south, stone Brunn -le-Haut in the southwest and Flaxlanden in the northwest.

History

Traces of settlement can be traced to the Neolithic period in the municipality. In the past 336 meters above sea Gross Bock found the remains of a Roman villa from the period between the 8th and 10th centuries.

Niederstein Brunn was first mentioned in the 9th century. As also the surrounding villages the village belonged to the reign of Landser, which was subordinate to the noble family of stone Brunn from the 12th to the 14th century. After the extinction of the family Niederstein Brunn initially fell to the Lords of Häsingen, later to the Stewards of Wolhausen and finally in 1694 to the family of Reinach Oberstein Brunn.

Within the area until the 19th century, two mills were operated: south of the town center the Schleiffmühle, east of the Kaegymühle.

The Church of St. Leger ( Saint -Léger ) was originally one of two churches in the village. The two parishes were united after 1545, the church building but passed on. The church of St. Lawrence in 1756 closed due to disrepair and later demolished, the church of St. Leger was renewed in 1773 and enlarged. It houses a Pietà in a wall niche dating back to 1520 and the statues of St. Blaise and Nicholas. The crucified Christ above the door to the sacristy dates from 1630.

The present Town Hall ( Mairie ) is the former rectory of the now-defunct St. Lawrence Church. Esstammt from the mid-16th century.
