Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania
Susquehanna County is a county located in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. In the 2000 census, the county had 42 238 inhabitants and a population density of 20 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Montrose.
History
The County was formed on February 21, 1810 Luzerne County and named for the Susquehanna River.
Geography
The county has an area of 2,156 square kilometers, of which 25 square kilometers are water surface. About 60 percent of the area is forested.
Demographic data
According to the U.S. Census in 2000, lived in Susquehanna County 42 238 people, there were 16,529 households, and 11,785 families. The population density was 20 people per km ². There were 21,829 housing units at an average population density of 10 inhabitants per km ². 98.54 % were white, 0.3 % black or African American, 0.15 % Native American, 0.22% Asian American, 0.01 % Pacific Islander, 0.17% members of other races, and 0.6 % members of several breeds. 0.67% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos of all races. 16.1 % had German ancestry, 15.4% English, 15.1% Irish, 10.6% American, 8.6% Italian and 7.7% Polish.
There were 16,529 households, 31.9 % of which were living in under-age children, in 57.7 % married couples living together, 8.6% were living in single mothers and 28.7 % have someone living unmarried. 24.3% were single and 11.5 % were living alone who is 65 or older. In an average household lived 2.53 and an average family lived 2.99.
25.5% were younger than 18, 6.7 % from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 25.2% between 45 and 64 and 15.50% 65 or older. The median age was 40 years. 50.3 % of all subjects were female, 49.7 % were male. 51.1 % of all full- olds were female, 48.9 % were male.
