Sweeney Schriner

David " Sweeney " Schriner ( born November 30, 1911 in Saratov, Russian Empire; † 4 July 1990) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who played from 1934 to 1946 for the New York Americans and Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League.

Career

Born in the Russian Saratov he grew up in Calgary. Schriner was the first Russian-born player in the NHL. In the NHL, he started in the season 1934/35 at the New York Americans with 18 goals and 22 assists and was a rookie of the year Calder Trophy, with Schriner against the runner- Bert Connolly traversed by the New York Rangers. He was with the Americans the star on Broadway. After five years he moved in exchange for Busher Jackson, Elwyn "Doc" Romnes and three other players to Toronto. There he won the 1942 and 1945 Stanley Cup. Especially in 1942, this was his merit, as Toronto had lost to Detroit the first three games, he had five goals relevant share of the comeback of the Leafs.

In 1962 he was honored with induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
