Ukraine in the Eurovision Song Contest

This article deals with the history of Ukraine as a participant in the Euro Vision Song Contest.

Regularity of participation and success in competition

Ukraine took first time in 2003 and since then, every year on the Euro Vision Song Contest. During the first post even landed 14th place in midfield, has already been achieved with Ruslana Wild Dances in the following year the first victory in the competition. After poor placement 2005, Ukraine in 2006 was able to convince in 2007 and again in 2008 and it reached a 7th place and two 2nd place. Commercial success

Wild Dances Europe was commercially very successful and was in Greece and ten weeks in Belgium at number one on the charts. In Ukraine, the Ukrainian and English version reached independently also number one in the charts. Dancing Lasha Tumbai, the contribution of 2007, reached - simply by downloads - number 28 in the UK and number 31 in Ireland. In France, the song was even a Top 10 hit, reaching number six.

National preliminary decisions

2005

2005, the preliminary decision was particularly complex, it comprised no less than 15 semi-final rounds, each with five participants, each of which qualified the best for the final. 2006

2010

On New Years Eve 2009, the Ukrainian broadcasters before the internally selected candidates for the Grand Prix in 2010. It was Wassyl Lazarowich. On March 6, he put in a public preliminary round six songs. Was decided by televoting and jury. There was criticism because other singers did not have the chance to apply as a candidate. The winner is the ballad I Love You.

Now, other singers had the chance to solve the ticket to Oslo. The transmitter allowed the zurückgewiesenden singer Wassyl Lazarowich participate in the new decider. 2011

This year there were five preliminary rounds, three semifinals before the actual finale. In 2011 there was a scandal in the preliminary round, as the runner-up Zlata Without Malevich and the third placed Jamala felt cheated because of alleged vote manipulation by the champion Mika Newton. The transmitter NTU offered a second final in the top three, but that due to the cancellation of the two plaintiffs did not materialize. Thus Mika Newton was still able to represent the Ukraine.

2012-2014

Since 2012 there has been no more conspicuous. The preliminary rounds were abolished and a finale, 2012 in February and since the end of December 2013, consisting of 21 and since 2013 20 participants, leading to the Ukrainian contribution.

Organisers of the Euro Vision Song Contest 2005

After the victory of 2004, Ukraine hosted the Euro Vision Song Contest 2005 in Kiev. Between the two competitions, the time was in the country " Orange Revolution ", which is why it was not certain whether competition actually could take place in Kiev. Languages

Much of the Ukrainian contributions has been completely presented in English, but there were some exceptions. Both in 2005 and 2007, the songs were multilingual: Green Jolly sang in Ukrainian, English, Polish, German, Spanish, French and Russian, Serduchka two years later in English, German, Ukrainian and Russian. The two words in the title line Lasha Tumbai have no meaning, but listen to after Russia goodbye.
