Comarques of Catalonia

The circle Val d' Aran has an autonomous special status because it does not belong to the only Catalan, but the Gascon language area.

History

The current division of Catalonia into circles goes back to a decree of the autonomous regional government ( Generalitat ) of Catalonia of 1936. As a result of taking away the autonomy of Catalonia after the victory of Franco in the Spanish Civil War, it was canceled in 1939.

Many of the county name had during the Franco era - in Spanish spelling - not only as the unofficial names of their respective area inventory, but remained as an additional place names still in use, which corresponds to this day in many parts of Spain prevailing practice, the name of the circle (Spanish: Comarca ) add the community name. After the restoration of autonomy of Catalonia, the comarques in 1987 again received an official status as an administrative districts. In 1988, the circles Pla de l' Estany, Pla d' Urgell and Alta Ribagorça were newly formed and 1990 some county boundaries changed slightly.

Parallel to the circles continue to exist in 1833 established as administrative units of the Spanish central government four Catalan provinces of Barcelona, Girona, Lleida and Tarragona. Northern Catalonia

In belonging to France Northern Catalonia there are six historic districts which together form the present-day département of Pyrénées- Orientales. In addition to the five Catalan comarques also Occitan Fenouillèdes ( cat.: Fenolleda ) is added. The external borders of the total area but do not correspond exactly to the administrative boundaries of today's departments, and the circles have, in contrast to the Spanish Catalonia also no administrative function.

  • Rosselló with 92 municipalities, capital Perpignan ( katal. Perpinyà )
  • Vallespir with 21 municipalities, capital Ceret
  • Conflent with 53 municipalities, capital Prades ( Prada ).
  • Capcir with 7 municipalities, capital Formiguà ( Formiguera )
  • Alta Cerdanya with 27 municipalities, capital of Mont- Louis ( Montlluís ).
  • Fenouillèdes with 28 municipalities, capital Saint -Paul -de- Fenouillet.
