Çorum Province

Çorum is a province of Turkey. Its capital is the same Çorum.

The province has 535 405 inhabitants ( 2010 census ) in an area 12,820 km ². It borders the provinces of Kırıkkale, Yozgat, Amasya, Samsun, Sinop, Kastamonu and Çankırı.

History

  • 5000-3000 BC: The first human settlements in the area of Çorum were founded about 7000 years ago. After excavations in Alacahöyük, Balımsultan, Büyük Güllücek, Boğazkale, Eskiyapar, Hüseyindede and Kuşsaray this region was developed technically and culturally far from nearby natural resources.
  • 3000-1000 BC: In the Bronze Age was Çorum scene of many cities -ups. Around 2000 BC was one of Çorum to a principality of the Hatti.
  • 1950-1850 BC: At this time existed in this area trading colonies ( Karum ) of the Assyrians, from which the first written messages.
  • Before 1500-1200 BC: The Hittites have the center of their empire in Hattusa, near the modern town Boğazkale.
  • After Seevölkersturm and indirectly related case of the Hittite empire, the area belongs to the realms of the Phrygians, and later of the Medes, to then to be working in the Persian Empire and then the empire of Alexander.
  • After the Diadochenkämpfen is the territory part of the Kingdom of Cappadocia, which is part of the Roman and then the Byzantine Empire later.

Ruin places

Among the most important and earliest settlement sites include Alacahöyük and the capital of Hattusa Hethither, today Boğazkale (formerly Bogazköy ) with the rock sanctuary of Yazılıkaya. There are impressive ruins and a small museum at both locations. Interesting is also the Hittite city Šapinuwa in Ortaköy.
