Expedition 18

ISS Expedition 18 mission is the designation for the 18 long-term crew of the International Space Station ( ISS). The crew lived and worked from October 2008 to April 2009 on board the ISS.

  • Yuri Valentinovich Lonchakov ( third space flight), flight engineer ( Roscosmos / Russia)
  • To November 2008: Gregory Chamitoff (1st space flight), flight engineer (NASA / USA) ( STS -124 - STS -126 )
  • From November 2008 to March 2009: Sandra Magnus ( second space flight ), aircraft engineer (NASA / USA) ( STS -126 - STS -119 )
  • From March 2009 to July 2009: Koichi Wakata ( third space flight), flight engineer ( JAXA / Japan) ( STS -119 - STS -127 )

Backup crew

  • Michael R. Barratt, Commander (NASA / USA) ( for Fincke)
  • Gennady Ivanovich Padalka, Flight Engineer ( Roscosmos / Russia) ( for Lonchakov )
  • Timothy Creamer, flight engineer (NASA / USA) ( for Chamitoff )
  • Nicole Stott, board engineer (NASA / USA) ( Magnus )
  • Soichi Noguchi, flight engineer ( JAXA / Japan) ( for Wakata )

Mission History

Gregory Chamitoff already traveled 31 May 2008 with STS -124 to the ISS and was part of the ISS Expedition 17 The two astronauts Edward Michael Fincke and Yuri Lonchakov launched on 12 October 2008, together with the space tourists Richard Garriott aboard Soyuz TMA -13 to the space station and thus completed the crew for expedition 18

Oleg Dmitrievich Kononenko The return of Sergei Alexandrovich Volkov and (both Expedition 17) and Richard Garriott took place on 24 October 2008 aboard Soyuz TMA- 12th

The astronaut Sandra Magnus met on November 16, along with STS -126 on the station. It replaced the Chamitoff returned on board the space shuttle to Earth.

On 22 December 2008, the first extra - vehicular activity (EVA ) of the mission took place. Fincke and Lonchakov away several experiments of the exterior of the station and replaced them with others. The insert had an overall length of about 5 1/2 hours.

The second EVA was performed on 10 March 2009. There was tape from the Pirs airlock to ensure a smooth flow of future docking maneuvers. Furthermore, the experiment Expose -R was installed to investigate the effects of space on organisms and biological materials. Finally, the state of the space station was photographically documented. The outdoor application took almost five hours.

On March 12, a station, the approximate debris part was discovered too late to perform an evasive maneuver. The crew then prepared before the evacuation of the ISS. At 16:35 UTC, they went into the Soyuz to leave in an emergency station within the shortest possible time. However, a collision did not take place and the astronauts were able to resume at 16:45 UTC resume their work.

Sandra Magnus returned after four months in orbit on 26 March 2009 with STS -119 back to Earth. It was replaced by Koichi Wakata, who remained until June at the station and therefore also a member of the ISS Expedition 19 and ISS Expedition 20 was.

28 March 2009 docked Soyuz TMA -14 to the space station and brought the other two astronauts for Expedition 19, Gennadi Ivanovich Padalka and Michael Barratt, to the station. Also on board was the American space tourist Charles Simonyi. He returned on April 8 back together with Fincke and Lonchakov aboard Soyuz TMA -13 to the earth, their decoupling at the same time meant the official end of ISS Expedition 18.
