FIBA Africa Championship 1978
The basketball Africa Cup 1978, the ninth basketball Africa Championship, took place between December 24, 1977 and January 1, 1978 in Dakar, Senegal, which hosted the championship for the second time. Winner was the national team of Senegal that could win the title for the third time. For the first time took teams from Mauritania and Gambia in the tournament.

In the preliminary round was played in two groups of five teams. Each team played against each other exactly once, so that each team exactly four games ( a total of 20 games have been completed ) completed. Pro victory, there were two points for a defeat at least one point. The two highest point totals moved into the semi-finals. In this played the top-ranked teams against the runners-up of the respective other group. The third-placed teams playing for fifth place, the fourth-placed for seventh and the fifth-placed team last played and ninth from.
